As the sun sets on Women's History Month (in the US, anyway - fellow Canadians, we have another opportunity in October), let's talk turkeyβ€”because empowerment isn't just a hashtag; it's a paycheck.πŸ‘›While the world toasts to women's achievements, many of us are ironically offered a glass of exposure instead of compensation. "Speak for free," they say. "It's for a good cause!" But last I checked, my mortgage doesn't accept "good causes" for payment.I've spoken with gals from all walksβ€”they're not speakers by trade, yet find themselves unwitting philanthropists in their fields. This 'freebie mindset' is a shackle we must shake off, not just in March, but year-round. Pro speakers feel this pinch too.πŸ˜‘πŸŽ€So, I'm advocating with a trio of hashtags that pack a punch: #KnowYourWorth, #EmpowerWomenByPayingWomen, #EventRevolution. But here's a thoughtβ€”what if we all got nosy? At events, start asking the awkward questions: "Are the speakers being paid?" "Is that coffee ethically sourced?" "Are the small biz folks getting their due?" Let's get those conversations brewing! β˜•οΈπŸ”Imagine the ripples we'd make, the tide we'd turn. Perhaps we'd stir up a storm, a genuine #EventRevolution! And how about we borrow a leaf out of LinkedIn's book? Instead of donning #OpenToWork, we flip it to #OpenToBePaid.πŸ’°βœ¨A provocation? Absolutely. But remember, the most significant movements started with a single, bold question. So, what say you? Let's not just make historyβ€”let's make sure we're writing the checks too.βœοΈπŸ’« #makeitrainWhat do you think? Join the conversation, and let's turn this provocation into a celebration of our worth. πŸ’ƒπŸ’¬πŸ’₯ ... See MoreSee Less

Enough is enough! πŸ›‘ Have you ever stared at your career and thought, 'That's it, I'm done!' Whether it's the lack of inclusion, finding zero meaning in your work, being undervalued, or enduring a culture that's as inspiring as a wet blanket... and don't get me started on being underpaid for your brilliance (that's a whole different comedy show)!I waved goodbye to my training firm long before COVID became the world's most unwanted guest. Why? Leading a persuasive communications training company was draining my soul faster than a leaky faucet. Was it my team's priorities or wading through corporate sludge that left me gasping for air? Who knows. But I know I'm not alone in yelling 'enough.'In fact, my latest chat on the YouMeWe Amplified podcast features the remarkable Amina Mohamed, founder of Cameras for Girls. She had her own awakening. Although I haven’t chatted with the Ugandan girls and women she's impacted, I bet they're flourishing, with 77% landing jobs in photography, journalism, and communications. All because Amina saw a way to connect her compassion-connectionβ„’ with her homeland, Uganda.Despite calling Canada home for most of her adult life, Amina is building bridges between Canada and various African nations through virtual and in-person photography training and ethical photography practices.Want to dive into this wellspring of inspiration, strategy, and impact? You have awesome energy! No, seriously. That's not just a line. Yesterday, on a laid-back Sunday afternoon, I visited my local and favourite brewery. Woman after woman, ages 25 to 75, approached me and embraced me with a warm hug. My husband watched with a mix of curiosity and bemusement. "Who are these women?" he asked. "And why the parade of hugs?"I chuckled, harbouring a secret akin to a clandestine club meeting. You see, at some point over the yearβ€”be it in the ladies' room, on the dance floor, or while queuing for my beloved brewβ€”I had offered each of these women a compliment. Not your garden-variety "You look great," but something authentic, tailored just for her, something that made her stand a little taller, even if she was just 4 foot 2.I didn't set out to target these women. My natural admiration for their uniqueness created a bond. By some cosmic coincidence, they all congregated yesterday, drawn like moths (no disrespect intended) to the flame of a good brew and some tunes, forming what seemed like an endless parade of women pursuing a rekindled connection. My husband? Never seen him more envious. So, which woman are you? Are you the one lifting others authentically, or are you the one tearing them down by the water cooler or in your virtual rooms? What do we do when no one is watching to elevate women? Their presence, their contributions, their essence?Know this: whatever you project will boomerang back to you. I say this from experienceβ€”I haven't always gotten it right. But I'm grateful to have learned to check my ego at the door and see my colleagues, competitors, and patrons as allies in a collective effort to raise all boats. What do you do to uplift others? Spill the brew (just a little), and let's ferment a culture of positive change together. 🍻 #BeTheChange #youmeweevolution#womensupportingwomen #AuthenticCompliments #empowerment #consciousleadership #founder ... Thank you all for the Birthday Wishes. My eyes are still puffy from the celebrations - or it could have been from the late-night Big Mac. I thought I would share my LinkedIn post of my Birthday proclamation. Happy 57th birthday to me! That's right, I'm broadcasting my age loud and proud. So, what's the big deal? Am I doomed to a life of irrelevance and endless filters? Not on my watch. At 57, I'm hoping for some perks. Maybe I'll dodge those awkward advances and be valued for my contributions, not my looks. And can we please stop with the "You look better in Pink" nonsense? I don't care what color you think suits me best! (You know who you are... LinkedIn lurker.)I'm also over those cringy LinkedIn date requests and Facebook friend solicitations. If you're inspired by my posts, just hit 'follow,' like my husband does. Now, at 57, I hope women won't see me as a threat. I'm tired of being labeled as "strong" and "independent" to the point of invisibility. I want to be recognized for my hard work and dedication, not just my fashion sense. When I say to a woman, " I would like to collaborate, I mean it. I'm not here to steal your ideas or overshadow you. I want to amplify your brilliance, celebrate your achievements, and ensure you're recognized for your contributions. At this age, I cherish a small circle of friends who are there for me, judgment-free, warts and all. These women have lifted me up, not competed with me. That's what 57 looks like to me.I've weeding out the users and cherishing those genuine friends who aren't afraid of tough conversations. Who understands friendship is about reciprocity - energy in, energy out. That's real friendship. (You know who are!Feminine energy is real; use it for good. Because that is what all those hormones are meant to do. Even if you are like me, post-menopausal and dealing with some of those physical discomforts or, for some, those outright annoying interruptions of living our best self - don't worry; I got you as the perfect person you are.So, as I celebrate my 57th birthday on March 16th, I'm going to continue to take another step forward into my authentic voice and share what is on my mind and in my heart, particularly when it relates to how women can uplift each other, uplift society, and step into their power by being authentic while consciously impacting something greater than themselves. So, here's my birthday gift to you: I've got your back. If you want someone to celebrate and amplify your message (as long as it aligns with my values), tag me at @SuzanneFStevens and use #AmplifyMe. Consider it done. Thanks for joining me in celebrating 57 years of life, growth, and empowerment. Here's to many more! ... See MoreSee Less
