Enough is enough! 🛑 Have you ever stared at you

You have awesome energy! No, seriously. That's not

You have awesome energy! No, seriously. That's not just a line.

Yesterday, on a laid-back Sunday afternoon, I visited my local and favourite brewery. Woman after woman, ages 25 to 75, approached me and embraced me with a warm hug. My husband watched with a mix of curiosity and bemusement. "Who are these women?" he asked. "And why the parade of hugs?"
I chuckled, harbouring a secret akin to a clandestine club meeting. You see, at some point over the year—be it in the ladies' room, on the dance floor, or while queuing for my beloved brew—I had offered each of these women a compliment. Not your garden-variety "You look great," but something authentic, tailored just for her, something that made her stand a little taller, even if she was just 4 foot 2.
I didn't set out to target these women. My natural admiration for their uniqueness created a bond. By some cosmic coincidence, they all congregated yesterday, drawn like moths (no disrespect intended) to the flame of a good brew and some tunes, forming what seemed like an endless parade of women pursuing a rekindled connection.
My husband? Never seen him more envious.
So, which woman are you? Are you the one lifting others authentically, or are you the one tearing them down by the water cooler or in your virtual rooms? What do we do when no one is watching to elevate women? Their presence, their contributions, their essence?
Know this: whatever you project will boomerang back to you. I say this from experience—I haven't always gotten it right. But I'm grateful to have learned to check my ego at the door and see my colleagues, competitors, and patrons as allies in a collective effort to raise all boats.

After 23 years as a #ProfessionalSpeaker, I'm breaking my silence.

I'm boycotting #InternationalWomen’sDay.

Why? Because every year, my female colleagues and I, who make a living through the spoken word, are asked to grace the stages of non-profits and corporations alike, sharing our energy, insights, and years of curated knowledge for free.

Let's talk about empowerment, shall we?

Every Women's Day event focuses on this theme, yet the only people not empowered are the speakers who've spent over a month preparing for the engagement and years acquiring the knowledge that you want them to grace your stage with. Is this any better than not paying women equal to a man?

Sure, you may have speakers who are making an income from their corporation or non-profits (and let's be clear, people who work for non-profits get paid) and haven't invested years in the craft of speaking, messaging, and entertaining. But this travesty goes beyond women speakers and may affect many solopreneurs, people in the gig market, and small service organizations.

But we, too, need to eat.

"An opportunity to market ourselves" only gets more opportunities to market ourselves. When speaking with a speaking bureau this week, they mentioned they too are running into this constant request for women to speak for free. One of their prospective clients said, "If a big bank (I won't mention which one as I personally haven't confirmed they are not paying any of their 30 speakers) won't pay the speakers for Women's Day, so why would we?"

Let's be clear: this doesn't just happen on Women's Day. Conferences are continuously asking professional speakers to speak for free. As someone who has managed events, I know it can be a challenge to make an event affordable, but why do the speakers, who are one of the fundamental components of a successful event experience, need to pay the price?

So, sure, this post is a career risk (as an entrepreneur, I’m used to risk), but silence isn't an option. So, for this International Women's Day, I'm sitting out and kicking up my feet, saying I'm worth the value I bring. How about you?
