I get it, but what do you really care about? What do you care so much about that you would be willing to donate a good chunk of time and energy to experiencing its resolve? Oh, with or without pay?

In my book Make your contribution count for you, me, we, I introduce the concept of compassion-connection™.
Your compassion-connection is what or who you have a deep connection to, such as a particular group of people, animals, infrastructure, or the environment. Your compassion-connection™ chooses you. It stems from your authentic self. The feeling is unmotivated by a circumstance; it just is. With your compassion-connection™ comes profound concern and care. You feel for another or a situation, and you’re prepared to do something about it.

So, I’ll ask again. What do you care about?
In many of my keynotes or workshops, I ask this question. Some of which are leaders, entrepreneurs, volunteers, working in for-profit, not-for-profit, corporations, charities, or social enterprises. Many demonstrate pride for their organization’s social impact (you can hear the good old one-upmanship); however, just because you have pride in your work or organization, it doesn’t imply that work gives you meaning.
That could be because who the organization serves doesn’t pull at your heartstrings.
So how to discover your compassion-connection™?
Answer these five questions and exhausted your answer. When finished, let me know what you have discovered. If not your compassion-connection™, then it might just be a few questions away.
- How would you describe your authentic self?
- When do you feel your most authentic self?
- What is it about each of those situations that makes you feel fulfilled?
- When you were little, what were you drawn toward?
- What experiences bring you the most joy?
- Which group or issue can recreate that experience?
As you answer these questions, you will discover words and ideas that will rise off the page. Circle them. Reflect and consider which group (or issue) are you drawn toward.
Ideas to stimulate your compassion-connection™ juices.
Women leaders are my compassion-connection™. My cause is investing in higher education to empower women to lead the change we want to see in the world.
When you know what you are connected with, then the cause will come into the light.
This exercise is not absolute, but it lays the foundation for knowing who you want to be the beneficiary of your contributions—the more focused, the more impact, the more meaning.
